It's heating up here now, and thankfully the awnings seem to be doing their job. Well, Oscar rootled about a bit in the dirt and peat moss, and found that the moss itself was causing a build up of water, slowing the filtering process down to nought. So he dug up a strip of the stuff and replaced it with rocks and gravel. The water gushed through and I promptly did two loads of washing, no overflow. Yippee. I love it when everything actually works!

Well, winter has really arrived and it's a cold one here in Valencia this year. We were at minus 2 this morning and it hasn't got much above 7ºC all day. The house is holding up pretty well. We have a gas heater which we use at night in the living area. Without the heater the house is still warm. On cloudy days it stays around 16ºC but if the sun comes out it gets up into the 20s. Oscar and I went to a local nursery and got lots of lovely plants for our water recycling botanical cell. They are all in and so far none have keeled over dead. We are now flushing the toilet with water that has been used for our shower and then filtered through the gravel and peat moss to the well at the end of this cell. Well, it's more than a month since what ended up being the first of a series of torrential rainfalls. We have had SO MUCH water. Wow. This is what 160 litres of rain per square metre per hour looks like at our house. It was a real whopper storm with lightning falling right on us (obviously not on us-us but right near us and I even got an electric shock as I was barefootedly leaning on our wet aluminium door frame wondering at nature. Another thing we did in August was lay the concrete slab floor. Of course there was no hope of getting a truck with a hose in to send the however many cubic metres of concrete in the easy way, so we hired a cement mixer and shovelled gravel and cement and lime like serious professional shovellers (Hey, what do you do? We had saved quite a few blue gin bottles (no - we didn't drink it all ourselves) and other bottles we liked the shape of and in July we hired a wet tile cutting saw. The place we hired it from didn't have a small machine so we had to take a HUGE one which weighed a ton but got the job done. On the first weekend of August the guys from the band came to stay over and give us a hand with the house. We got heaps done on the ceiling and quite a bit of rough mudding. I had SO much fun on Sunday with a rotovator and our apricot tree. I was happily rotovating (?) our patch of soil and compost when the tree reached down and positively tore a chunk out of my shoulder. Ouch! It did so not want its roots to be accidentally 'vated. I ploughed bravely on and made lovely tilth as Mr Seymour says for our little potatoes, peppers, aubergines, basil, tomatoes et al.

So then we started laying down the insulation board, first on the greenhouse and later on the main body of the Us. The water tanks arrived on THE hottest day of the summer so far. The poor guy installing them came from Zamora and suffered terribly while working last Sunday. He also happened to be the SLOWEST hole driller in the world. Well, there's plenty of backlog to put up on the site. I'll go working on it as I have time.Right now we are in stressville waiting for things to happen. We have the water tanks ordered and tomorrow will order timber to put the roof on.
