water, plants, 11 years and a new cat

Well, we've been enjoying our first month in the earthship and it has pretty much come up to expectations. The temperature is constantly at about 21ºC at the moment, blinds in summer will be necessary to maintain that and I think we will probably end up putting a fire place in the living for the look of it and also to take and cold edges off that may creep in during the winter.

Unfortunately, the most unbelievably torrential rains have shown that I am not too proficient at sealing skylight holes and I have to hunt about for where the (very small amount of) water has filtered through to drip into strategically placed buckets. At least they are only very minor drips but I must admit, it made me feel a bit sick to the stomach when I first saw water on the floor. Hopefully I will sort it out in the next dry spell.

Our planter is amazing - the plants are completely out of control and gorgeously healthy. In just a couple of months they have gone from this to this

Our Carla turned 11 last week (!) and all of us survived her first slumber party (!!).

And we have a new cat... His name is Floyd and I rescued him from the street. He LOVES me for it and is behaving like a dog following me about everywhere to lavish catty affection on me. Moy and Luka are getting used to him slowly...

  1. Hi there,
my name is Tina Rico and I'm trying to contact Lisa And Oscar in Valencia.
We are trying to build an Earthship in Spain and need some advice.
We have tried the email address in the blog but it comes back as invalid address.
We love the idea of building our house as the Earthships and need all the information we can get.
This way of thinking, and building, and living, should be known by every sensible person around the world, and I like to think that we are many.
    Tell everyone about them.
    We have.
Hope someone gets back to us.
    Thank you.
    T.

  3. Hola!

  5. I was wondering what the significance of the sneakers and the mean look were about? Was it that long a night and were the girls that ornery?

  6. I have neglected the site for a bit (have to put it back in my Google Reader), but.., maaaaaaaannnnnn..., it look ssoooo good. Seems like every comment I leave says "it looks sooo good", but it really does.
The planter is awesome and the rest of the house, ugh, just beautiful. You guys did an amazing job.

Perceverance prevailed. You are our shining example...

  8. Ok. Looks like I need to stay on topic if I want to stay in this blog. I have been on the lookout for a site to buy and build on and it is somewhat frustrating for me. with work taking up much of the week. I work for a railroad and being shorthanded does take a toll no matter how well the pay supposedly is. Been looking for a south or southwest facing slope and/or a borrowpit thats been mined out. Down here in southwest Kansas. There are a lot of them in along the Cimarron River, but many of the farmers really dont want to sell because of the secondary use as pasturage or government set aside that has been in place for years now. I find blogs and pages like yours very encouraging because someone has found a way in their particular case to make an honest go of things. So I,m going to keep looking

    Muchas gracias
