mercedes, new chickens and a broody american..

We had an avocado tree that had grown from a seed and was about as tall as me. Note the past tense. The culprit is in the background there, innocently munching on grass like she was supposed to in the first place. I was fortunate enough to have picked most of the best leaves off the basil to be frozen in readiness for the coming months before Mercedes decimated it too. Lucky she is such a sweetie, otherwise I might be tempted to listen to my father-in-law's espousing the virtue of goat at (or perhaps more correctly, on) the table.

We have a new clutch of chickens to keep the old boilers company. They haven't started laying yet but when they do we will have an absolute glut of eggs. If the broody american doesn't steal them. She has been sitting on her eggs for two weeks now and we found that she was stealing the other chook's eggs to add to her clutch. Oscar's dad came over the other night with a special light and we checked all of the eggs to see if there were actually any chickens inside them. Of the 12 she was sitting on, only two have chicks. No disappointment for me - who want's a hundred chickens anyway?

Hello Oscar and Lisa,

My name is Guy and I live in Belgium. April next year we will be coming to Valancia because one of my nieces lives there and is getting married. Some time ago I found out about an earthship not too far from Valencia, yours. My girlfriend and I are both very enthusiastic about this concept and we would really love to visit one. There are no earthships in Belgium, so our visit to Valencia would be a great opportunity to see one. If that would be ok for you of course. I don't know if your home is open to visitors, I can imagine many people ask this question, and we don't want to be a hassle.

I couldn't find another way to contact you than through this comments section, I hope you don't mind that either. You can always reach me at gukkig_dt@hotmail.com .
Anyway, I hope you are both have a great time and wish you all the best !

Sincerely,
Guy Blommaert

Hi folks!

Just wanted to drop a line to tell you how much I enjoyed your blog - I read the whole history of your house this morning and it was fascinating! My husband and I have just decided to build an earthship here outside of Las Vegas where we live, and we are in the very preliminary planning stages.

Your blog gives me a lot of hope, in that that two apparently normal people have built a gorgeous house. Excellent work, and thank you for sharing your story!!

Cheers!
Pam

Hello Oscar and Lisa,
My husband and I are in the very preliminary stages of planning to build an earthship. We have considered building a hut and living in it as you did, while we build our earthship. I haven't been able to find much information on the huts....about how the set up for running water and electricity is, or if they even have any, and if it's comfortable for kids. I had read you can build one for about $1200, but I was curious to know if this was accurate and included water and electriciy. It sounds like you have a daughter. I have two boys and I'm looking for cheap temporary housing that will be reasonably comfortable for a family of four. Do you have any advice? Thank you for your time and for this blog. It is very helpful! It helps me to see that building your dream home is attainable, one step at a time!
sincerely,
Kristin
